Torneko's Great Adventure (Japanese: トルネコの大冒険 不思議のダンジョン) is the first series in the Mystery Dungeon franchise. Beginning in 1993 as a spin-off of the Dragon Quest franchise with the release of 
Torneko's Great Adventure: Mystery Dungeon
, it was the first Mystery Dungeon game to be released from the franchise along with baring the titular moniker. The series usually takes place in a western setting, although elements from other cultures and times are also present occasionally. The stories are primarily centered around Torneko and his family.

Gameplay
The
Torneko's Great Adventure series consists of video games in which the player explores
dungeons consisting of randomly generated or randomly selected grid floors, with turn based gameplay. The playable character is usually
Torneko, who typically attacks
Monsters using a
Weapon, increases his defense by equipping a
Shield, and uses a variety of other items, such as
Scrolls and
Staves, to aid exploration, combat, or escape from dangerous situations. Such items are usually found on the ground and put in the player's inventory, where they can be managed, sorted, or identified to understand their usage and purpose. Because the inventory space is limited, inventory management is an important part of the game. Players decide which items they should keep or discard, and when it is best to use them. Jars are items that play an important role in inventory management, because they allow to store items, thus increasing inventory space, although with some limitations and additional mechanics.
