Nintendo DS

Nintendo DS Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer, also referred to as Shiren 1 DS for short, is a video game in the Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer series. It is a remake of Super Famicom Mystery Dungeon 2: Shiren the Wanderer. The game was later ported to smartphones and modified for the platform.

The story follows Shiren the Wanderer and his talking weasel Koppa on a quest to reach the top of Table Mountain in a 2D, sprite-based world themed after feudal Japan.

The gameplay of Shiren 1 DS is turn-based and takes place on a grid where movement is done in the four cardinal directions and diagonals. After clearing the tutorial dungeon, all Adventures begin in Canyon Hamlet, at Level 1. Players defeat Monsters and are awarded Experience and level up. The goal is to survive each floor and climb to the next, however, each floor's layout is randomly generated along with the loot and monsters. When defeated, players are sent back to Canyon Hamlet to begin a new adventure, stripped of all items, levels, and Gitan—the currency. Adventure Allies can be recruited in some Dungeons and may aid in defeating monsters, but may also get defeated, leveling them up in the process. The game features various side quests that are progressed over numerous adventures and may unlock adventure allies, new dungeons, items, mechanics, locations, and more.

When players are defeated in a dungeon, they can request a Rescue a certain number of times based on the dungeon, however, the online functionality is no longer supported, and rescues must be done via local wireless or by sharing passwords.

The theme of Shiren 1 DS is all about balance. Players are intended to accept defeat and try again. An ally may aid in defeating a monster, but they may be defeated in turn and make the monster level up, thus making it more dangerous. Exploring a floor may yield additional loot and experience, however, the Winds of Kron (an anti-grinding measure) and Shiren's depleting Fullness will prevent players from sticking around for too long. While some players may be discouraged by the loss of a valuable item, the important thing to remember is to treat each defeat as a learning experience, as each item can be replaced, levels can be replaced, but players will only continue to lose items if they don't grow as a player and learn from their mistakes. Even the quests are designed to be unlocked across numerous adventures, as players aren't intended to stick around and grind through every side objective in one go. The intent is for players to progress with each side objective a little more with each subsequent adventure.

One method by which the game aims to help new players think creatively is Fay's Puzzles. There are 50 replayable puzzles, where the player can face off against pre-set dungeon layouts, each centered around a lesson to teach players to think beyond attacking monsters directly in every interaction. Such as using a Pain Sharing Staff to share damage with a monster, and then intentionally activating a Landmine Trap to damage it from a safe distance, while recovering HP in a controlled environment.

Super Famicom (Satellaview)

Super Famicom BS Shiren the Wanderer: Save Surala is a game in the Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer series that was originally distributed through Satellaview broadcasts in four parts, released once a part. It was popular among people who had never played Super Famicom Mystery Dungeon 2: Shiren the Wanderer, and those who had played Super Famicom Torneko's Great Adventure: Mystery Dungeon(UT) - This is an unofficial translation.. It was voted number one in a popular poll for Satellaview games people wanted to play again on the Nintendo official website, so it was rebroadcast between July 1 and July 28, 1997, from 17 to 18:00.[1][2] Save Surala is partially Lost Media, and has never been officially re-released on any other platform or through any other means. Parts 2 to 4 have been preserved, with part 1 currently undumped. However, even if all 4 parts were dumped and playable, they would still be missing many of the original features that are no longer accessible, such as the live events or voice narration. Fever Time in Nintendo Switch/Steam Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island in 2024 was the next time the series would see this mechanic in a main-series title.

Each part would begin with an introductory message from Gaibara, along with a cutscene showing events from Super Famicom Mystery Dungeon 2: Shiren the Wanderer where Shiren met and recruited an Adventure Ally. That ally would then randomly spawn in the dungeon to aid the player on their journey for that part's adventure. Shi-Rangers would have less than an hour to gather as much loot as possible and transport it through 7 Floors to the next Rest Area for the next part's broadcast. Part 4 would require Shi-Rangers to save Surala, and escort her to the Golden City. Upon reaching the Golden City, Gaibara would be in the mural room and would instruct the Shi-Rangers to keep playing for a higher score. Successfully escorting Surala to the Golden City would net the players 1,000,000 extra points, and the top 100 scoring players would receive a signed certificate.[3] Jumbo Mamel Plushies (Japanese: 不乱にん) and were awarded to high-scoring players.[4] After the time limit was up, the game would automatically end, displaying the credits and a cutscene where Shiren and Koppa, Oryu, Pekeji, Kechi, and Gaibara meet Bobolo and Lara in Canyon Hamlet, where they're reunited with Surala, before Shiren leaves.

Wii

Wii Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer 3 - The Sleeping Princess and the Karakuri Mansion, also referred to as Shiren 3 Wii, is a game in the Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer series. Originally available for the Wii in Japanese and English, it received a graphically downgraded, Japan only PlayStation Portable rerelease with balance changes, and 6 additional Dungeons.

Shiren 3 Wii is set in a 3D world designed after feudal Japan. Shiren and Koppa meet up with Shiren's uncle Sensei, and childhood friend Asuka, in an effort to unravel the mystery of the mysterious Karakuri Mansion.

Dungeon gameplay takes place on a grid, with movement in the four cardinal directions and diagonals, while town location movement is done in a free-moving 3D environment, and overworld movement is done on a flat map with waypoints that a sprite of the character moves between. Unlike other Shiren titles, the player characters retain their levels, although it doesn't make the game any easier. At the start of the game, players are given 2 difficulty options; Easy and Normal. On the Easy difficulty, when players are defeated in a dungeon during the main story, they're reset to their last save point. On the Normal difficulty, players are kicked out of the dungeon, and all of their Items and Gitan are lost. The Japanese release features rescues, while the North American release doesn't. Despite what the name implies, the "Easy" difficulty doesn't make the game that much easier, and the 30-dungeon~ main story eventually devolves into a grind-fest to power through the increasingly difficult dungeons to make it to the end credits regardless of the difficulty.

Some side quests can be progressed during the main story, though they may also be missed, halting progress until players clear the main story. Unlike other Shiren titles, Shiren 3 is more of an RPG, and less of a "roguelike", where quests and rare items may be an hour, or 300-hour-long endeavor depending on player-skill, and familiarity with the game mechanics. The post-credits gameplay offers a mix of the standard-issue level reset dungeons and dungeons where players continue to retain their levels. Dungeons are mixed on whether or not they allow items to be carried in, and some dungeons may even require items to be carried in, such as the Void of the Strong.

Rescues, online leaderboards, connectivity with Nintendo DS Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer DS2 - Magic Castle of the Desert, and other related mechanics were removed from the North American release, and most of which no longer function in the Japanese release, due to the shut down of Wii online support. The two bonus dungeons Shrine of Mystery and Mysterious Dungeon were made available by default in the North American release.

Pachinko

CR Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer: Princess Suzune and the Tower of Slumber, also referred to as Tower of Slumber, is a pachinko game in Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer series. There are four machines in total, each with a different theme and probability of jackpots. The machines use the Shining Wall frame, with the coloration of Pink and Black for the FPF, FPT, and FPS machines and Pink, Black, or Yellow for the FPW machine.

The story is about how the Shrine Maiden in charge of the dream world, Princess Suzune, and the divine beast Baku gathered the dreams of everybody in the world to purify them, however, Shiren and his friend's dreams corrupted them, turning the dream world into a Mystery Dungeon. Monsters that Shiren and his friends previously defeated make an appearance and Shiren and his friends aim to defeat them again. Curas, Ragoon, the Tainted Insect, and Ikazuchikami must be defeated while in the Tower of Slumber, and then Baku must be defeated and the collapsing Tower of Slumber must be escaped to restore peace to the dream world.

During gameplay, players turn the ball shooter knob and fire pachinko balls into the playfield. Depending on how far they turn it, the ball will travel a different distance. Pachinko balls will bounce off of brass nails on the playfield and into pay pockets or the losing ball hole, where they will be recycled by the parlor, if played in a pachinko parlor, or dealt with by the player if played at home.

The goal is to get balls into the front-center pay pocket, where 3 pachinko balls will be awarded as a prize, and a pseudo-slot spin will be granted. If players get 2 matching numbers on the right and left side, the game will go into a "Reach Event", where a mini-game or cutscene will play. Success will lead to a boss fight while losing will revert back to the standard gameplay screen. If players get 3 matching numbers, the game will go into a Wanderer Rush and award a jackpot of pachinko balls.

The game features several animated background locations, and other locations only appear in mini-games or during cutscenes, and can't be explored in the traditional Shiren the Wanderer way.

Nintendo Switch/Steam Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island, also referred to as Shiren 6, is the latest game in the Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer series, and the first new, main series Shiren game using traditional gameplay since 2010.

It was released for the Nintendo Switch in early 2024, originally in Japanese and Traditional Chinese, followed by an English release soon after. The European release was published by Reef Entertainment.

Instead of being based on more recent games, Shiren 6 mostly takes inspiration from the earlier titles in the series, particularly Super Famicom Mystery Dungeon 2: Shiren the Wanderer for gameplay mechanics and Nintendo 64 Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer 2 - Shiren's Castle and the Oni Invasion for visuals, although there are certain similarities to other entries as well.

After the events of the Moonlight Village Scenario(NT) - This name was created by editors to describe something lacking a name., Shiren and Koppa receive a vision from a mysterious girl, and they decide to visit Serpentcoil Island, the main setting of the game, to rescue the girl and find treasure. Although this premise is what the main story revolves around, players are immediately faced with multiple characters and secondary stories occurring on the island, such as the relationships between two groups of pirates that have come to the island in search of treasure, or a village secretly inhabited by former ninjas, among others.

The gameplay is presented with 3D polygonal graphics in a top-down perspective, mostly taking place in a grid with turn based gameplay. Initially, the main goal of the game is simply to complete the main, 31 floors long dungeon, filled with towns and story events that progress as the dungeon is explored multiple times. New players may need several attempts to get to the end for the first time, however these attempts will help them get a better understanding of the game (and stored items, if desired), which is an important part of the experience. After the main dungeon is completed for the first time and the credits play, the game opens up significantly and reveals a lot more content, dungeons, stories, and side features to enjoy.

Multiplayer features consist of online Rescues and the Parallel Play mode, which allows players to share identical versions of a dungeon to replay indefinitely. The developers occasionally hold Official Parallel Play competitions.

The game has also received additional content through free updates and paid DLC, adding more dungeons, playable characters, puzzles, side modes, music, achievements, and unlockable artwork.
