Fay the Researcher (Japanese: 地変学者フェイ) is a character in the Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer series. He made his debut appearance in Super Famicom Mystery Dungeon 2: Shiren the Wanderer in 1995.

He's the creator and curator of Fay's Puzzles and Fay's Final Puzzle, a Mystery Dungeon in Canyon Hamlet.

Biography

Physical Appearance

Personality

Fay speaks with the "Ye Olde Butcherede Englishe" faux-Shakespearian manner, saying things such as "What dost thou sayeth?" when speaking to Shiren.[1] Though it may also all be an act, as his family speaks normally, as everybody else does.

History

According to his mother, Fay left to "Study strange dungeons."[2]

Shiren 1

Fay's the curator of Fay's Puzzles in Canyon Hamlet. It's revealed in the Super Famicom version that the house where Fay hosts his puzzles was loaned to him by the Ranking Chief(UT) - This is an unofficial translation.. In the Nintendo DS remake and its smartphone port, rankings are handled by menus and it's never addressed who gave Fay access to the house or who owns it.

After Shiren conquered all 50 of Fay's Puzzles, he created the Final Puzzle dungeon, which unbeknownst to him, leads directly to The Other Side of the World, where his family lives.

Moonlight Village

In the Game Boy release, players can play 100 of Fay's Puzzles, but he never makes a direct appearance in the game; nor does he interact with Shiren in any way.

Family Tree

It's not revealed who is older between Fay and his sister. It can then be inferred that Fay is potentially the older of the two, between him and his sister, due to him leaving home. His father does, however, refer to Fay as his oldest son and his youngest son speaks in a very childlike manner in his few lines of dialogue.
