Shiren 5 has Secret Pots (Japanese: ???) and new items (Japanese: ???), these two gameplay elements are closely intertwined.

At some point as you progress through the game, you can unlock access to the secret pots. These are not items you can carry around, but giant pots on the ground in the basement of Hotel Nekomaneki. You can unlock only 2 secret pots at first then you can later unlock the remaining 4 secret pots, for 6 total. The player can then "brew" or "bake" stock items in these secret pots in an attempt to make new items. (The terms "brew" and "bake" are not used by the game but are terms used by some in the player community. The term "stock item" is not used in the game either, but is shorthand for "a normal item that is built-in to the game, as opposed to a new item".) You can brew stock swords, shields, bracelets, grasses, scrolls, staves, and talismans, but not other categories of stock items. While you can make new items as the result of brewing, you can't re-insert a new item to re-brew it. Insert the base/stock item you want to modify then let it bake/brew for 1-7 days of real time. Each day that passes, there's a chance the magic effects of that item are scrambled into a new set of multiple, randomly chosen magic effects. (The base item's normal effect never goes away, but other effects can be added, including the effects of other stock items and effects which can't be found anywhere else in the game!) At any point between 1-7 days, the item may have changed into something new, and if you choose to take it out of the secret pot, you register it as a new item, and can now buy these new items any time you want from the raccoon who runs the secret pot room (max one purchase per run), and, you can also begin finding these new items randomly in a limited set of dungeons. You can have a maximum of 64 different new item types per game diary. If you try to make more than 64 new items, you're forced to choose an older new item to replace, in which case any existing copies of these older new items you might have saved anywhere are removed from the game. There is no way to delete new items from your diary's list of new items, but you must overwrite one every time you try to make a 65th new item.

According to the in-game hints, you can make even better new items the longer you let the item bake, but if you let an item bake for 8 or more days, it will turn into Weeds. Basically, you have to get lucky to get an awesome combination of effects bound to your new item then register it. Sometimes there will be a mix of mediocre effects, sometimes there will be multiple great effects but one terrible effect that spoils the combo, and sometimes you can create an item that is vastly better and more powerful than any similar stock item. Being able to buy copies of these new items at will and take them into dungeons that let you take items in, or finding copies of these items randomly in dungeons that don't let you take items in, can make a huge difference in your ability to win the run. But hardcore purists fear not; new items don't appear very frequently anywhere, and, there are plenty of dungeons that disallow new items completely.

New items can't be traded with other players.
