The Dead Soldier (Japanese: ぼうれい武者) Monster Family is a recurring group of four monsters in the Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer series. It made its debut in Super Famicom Mystery Dungeon 2: Shiren the Wanderer in 1995, making it one of the Original Monster Families. Its most recent appearance was in Nintendo Switch/Steam Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island in 2024.

The Dead Soldier Family consists of:

  1. Dead Soldier (Japanese: ぼうれい武者, Bōrei Musha)
  2. Dead Veteran (Japanese: ぼうれいはんにゃ, Bōreihannya)
  3. Dead General (Japanese: 将軍ゾンビ, Shōgun Zonbi)
  4. Dead Shogun (Japanese: 大将軍ゾンビ, Daishōgun Zonbi)

Biography

Characteristics

The Dead Soldier family doesn't spawn naturally, instead, only spawning when a member of the Evil Soldier Family is killed. The level of the monster spawned is determined by the level of the Evil Soldier family monster that was defeated, with exceptions for the games where the Dead Soldier was the only monster in the family at the time.

Physical Appearance

Dead Soldiers take the form of their respectively leveled Evil Soldier Family counterpart, though bereft of the samurai's shoulder spaulders, sode (Japanese: 袖) and helmet, kabuto (Japanese: 冑), and only equipped with a plated cuirass, do (Japanese: 胴) which connects to thigh plates, haidate (Japanese: 佩楯), and plain rounded boots.

Without upper body armor, Dead Soldiers are lean, skeleton-like creatures bearing soulless black eyes and two pointed teeth which are notable in Evil Soldiers. An orange band sits around the forehead of the monster and they have long untamed hair and three sharp-clawed fingers. Because Dead Soldiers appear after the samurai-like Evil Soldier is defeated, and are missing their sword, it is as if they have been slain in battle, and have returned as vengeful spirits, wandering the floor in search of a monster that can avenge them, hence their ability.

Trivia

  • Despite only one level existing at the time, the Super Famicom artwork matches the Dead Veteran of later games and the Evil Veteran of the original family.
    • Later levels may have been planned when the artwork was made, only for them to be cut from the game.
