The Inferno (Japanese: 火炎入道) Monster Family is a recurring group of four monsters in the Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer series. It made its debut in 
Mystery Dungeon 2: Shiren the Wanderer in 1995, making it one of the Original Monster Families. Its most recent appearance was in 
/
Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island in 2024.
The Inferno Family consists of:
- Inferno (Japanese: 火炎入道)
- Blazeous (Japanese: 魔炎入道)
- Igneous (Japanese: 獄炎入道)
- Infernous (Japanese: 煉獄入道)
Biography
Characteristics
Prior to / Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island, Inferno's could level up and change colors like other monster families in the games; however, its name remains the same, only adding a number to the end. This mechanic is used in various games in the series for monsters that can level up past their normal levels, such as a Gitan Mamel45 in Shiren 3. In Shiren 6, 3 new levels were added to the monster family, and the previous leveling mechanic was abandoned.
Monsters that function similarly include the N'Duba Family in 
Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer 2 - Shiren's Castle and the Oni Invasion, the Evil Tree Family in 
Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer 3 - The Sleeping Princess and the Karakuri Mansion/
