Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer Wiki
One branch of the Mystery Dungeon Franchise Wiki's Tree of Information.

Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer (Japanese: 不思議のダンジョン 風来のシレン) is the second series in the Mystery Dungeon franchise. Beginning in 1995 with the release of Super Famicom Mystery Dungeon 2: Shiren the Wanderer, a successor to Super Famicom Torneko's Great Adventure: Mystery Dungeon(UT) - This is an unofficial translation., it was the first Mystery Dungeon game to feature original characters and locations, as opposed to being a spinoff to an already established series. The series usually takes place in a traditional Japanese setting, although elements from other cultures and times are also present occasionally. The stories are primarily centered around Shiren the Wanderer and his talking weasel companion, Koppa.

To date, there have been numerous manga adaptations, several tabletop-based games and toys, and tie-in merch as well as more than 25 spin-off titles, most of which are Keitai games released in the 2000s. Shiren enthusiasts refer to themselves as Shi-Rangers, based on a group of characters introduced in a magazine in 1996.

Gameplay
The majority of the Shiren the Wanderer series consists of video games in which the player explores dungeons consisting of randomly generated or randomly selected grid floors, with turn based gameplay. The playable character is usually Shiren the Wanderer, who typically attacks Monsters using a Weapon, increases his defense by equipping a Shield, and uses a variety of other items, such as Scrolls and Staves, to aid exploration, combat, or escape from dangerous situations. Such items are usually found on the ground and put in the player's inventory, where they can be managed, sorted, or identified to understand their usage and purpose. Because the inventory space is limited, inventory management is an important part of the game. Players decide which items they should keep or discard, and when it's best to use them. Jars are items that play an important role in inventory management, because they allow to store items, thus increasing inventory space, although with some limitations and additional mechanics. The Jar of Holding in particular is used specifically to increase inventory space, and to protect certain types of items, such as food.
