The Wanderer's Path while using StreetPass.

StreetPass (Japanese: すれちがい通信) is a Multiplayer gameplay element in Nintendo DS Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer 5 - The Tower of Fortune and the Dice of Fate. StreetPass is unlocked after speaking to the Tanuki Ponta in the Hotel Nekomaneki basement. Once the Shi-Ranger has paid him 30 Gitan to unlock the Item Book, and the Monster Book, the StreetPass option will be available from the main menu (Japanese: すれちがい通信), and the basement menu (Japanese: せんでんに行く). Using the StreetPass mechanic is required to unlock the 5 additional Secret Pots. The Secret Pots can be unlocked by having two saves repeatedly interacting with one another, leaving the path, and then re-entering. The number of interactions needed to unlock Secret Pots may either be random or buggy, as it appears to require a different number of interactions for each save file.

Process

The top screen displays Shi-Rangers who have been encountered.

StreetPass allows Shi-Rangers to send their Wanderer Eraser (player avatar) to other Shi-Rangers, along with an optional New Item, and a message constructed of pre-selected text. While in StreetPass mode, the Wanderer Eraser will walk down an endlessly repeating path, and if another Nintendo DS family system is within range[notes 1] it will display the other Shi-ranger's Wanderer Eraser walking by them, pausing for a moment, and then continuing off to the left side of the screen. A total of 10 unique save files can be StreetPassed with before the Shi-Ranger will have to save and exit.

Wanderer Erasers

Super VIPs will be displayed with a gold icon, VIPs will be displayed with a green icon.

Once a Wanderer Eraser has been encountered, they will walk around the basement of Hotel Nekomaneki as a Customer (Japanese: お客さん), display their message if spoken to, and hand off the New Item on their first interaction. If the save file already has the New Item they're sharing, it will not be given. 32 customers can be registered at once. Customers can be registered as a VIP, which will prevent them from being overwritten or updated on subsequent StreetPasses. As the number grows, they'll be pushed off to rooms on the left and then the right side of the basement. Unlike unlocking the Secret Pots, StreetPassing with the same save data over and over will not unlock the basement expansions.

Transferring Wanderer Erasers

Shi-Rangers who have unlocked a Wanderer Eraser can StreetPass it to another; however, for it to be saved, they have to save the game a second time. If the DS is turned off after StreetPassing, the Wanderer Eraser will not be saved, but the Secret Pot and Customers will be. If StreetPass is selected from the Top Menu, upon returning to the Top Menu, the save file needs to be selected and suspended for the new Wanderer Eraser data to be retained.

Inventory Notice

If StreetPass is selected from the Top Menu, Shiren will spawn in a modified version of Hotel Nekomaneki where several of the areas are cordoned off, and several of the Characters will not be present. The Nekomaneki Storehouse and Nekomaneki Bank will be available. Any Items or Gitan in Shiren's inventory will be deleted upon returning to the Top Menu.

Event Distributions

Two event items were officially distributed via StreetPass in 2011, those being Koharu's Bracelet and Okon's Staff. Koharu's Bracelet has been preserved, and Okon's Staff remains unrecovered.
