Defense (Japanese: ぼうぎょ) is a stat in  Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon. It affects how much damage is taken when a Pokémon is attacked by Moves in the physical category.

Items That Affect Defense

	Four-Leaf Cookie	よつばのクッキー	Raises your max HP, Attack, Defense, Special Attack, Special Defense, or Speed permanently. If you're lucky enough, it will raise multiple stats.
	Guard Boost	まもりアップ	It increases Defense by +1 stage. Using this emera as an item increases your Defense stat by 2 points temporarily.
	Iron	ブロムヘキシン	Raises the Pokémon's Defense stat by 2 points permanently.
	Mega Donut	ビッグドーナツ	Raises your max HP, Attack, Defense, Special Attack, Special Defense, or Speed permanently. If you're lucky enough, it will raise multiple stats.
	Radiance Looplet	ひかりのリングル	It boosts the holder's Defense stat significantly by 40 points.
	Red Looplet	あかのリングル	It boosts the holder's Defense stat by 20 points.
	Soothing Seed	なだめのタネ	Eating it resets the Pokémon's Attack, Special Attack, Defense, Special Defense, accuracy, and evasiveness. Can be positive or negative depending on the circumstances.
	Sweet Chocolate	スイートチョコ	Raises your max HP, Attack, Defense, Special Attack, Special Defense, or Speed permanently. If you're lucky enough, it will raise multiple stats.
	Vile Seed	じゃあくなタネ	It decreases Defense by -3 stages.

Using any Red Emeras as items increases the Defense stat by 2 points temporarily.

Pokémon Formes That Affect Defense

Some Pokémon formes have passive stat stage modifiers. These modifiers cannot be altered by any effects that interact with visible stat changes, such as Haze, Psych Up, Heart Swap, Foresight, Power Trick, or Topsy-Turvy. They're also unaffected by abilities, such as Simple and Contrary. Transform also cannot copy these stat changes. Punishment can't detect passive stat changes during damage calculation. These passive stat changes can only be modified by specific effects that indirectly affect stat stages, such as Gravity, Sandstorm, various emeras, and abilities, such as Snow Cloak and Tangled Feet. They can also be swapped with the move Wonder Room. However, they can still be ignored just like any other visible stat change with abilities, such as Unaware, Keen Eye, No Guard, and with moves such as Chip Away and Sacred Sword.
