The Limited Run Games Controversy is an aspect of Mystery Dungeon history regarding Nintendo Switch/Steam Shiren the Wanderer: The Tower of Fortune and the Dice of Fate (2020) physical editions released by Limited Run Games. The purpose of this article is not to document the allegations of shady, scummy, or misleading business practices, or allegations of improperly packaged versions of games, or erroneous versions of games mailed out, or the bad behavior of Limited Run Games' founder.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14]

Origins

The International collector's edition of Shiren 5 2020 was released by Limited Run Games, and came in 2 formats; PC and Switch.

The Switch version came with a Mamel Stress Ball, Miracle Die, the Shiren the Wanderer: The Tower of Fortune and the Dice of Fate - Compendium of Wonders & Ten Views of Wandering art book, 3 art prints, and a Nintendo Switch copy of the game, housed in a large cardboard box, with a smaller box inside to hold the individual pieces of the edition. International players also had the opportunity to purchase a PC version.

Controversy

The PC release was initially supposed to include a DRM-free disk release of the PC port instead of a physical Switch game, however, this was later walked back without telling purchasers.[15] This was reportedly due to the cost of developing a DRM-free version of the game.[16] After game reviewer "Seafoam Gaming" called out Limited Run Games on Twitter, Limited Run Games offered a 10$ refund or a return.[17] Due to the controversy this whole situation sparked, they later sent out a full refund to people who purchased the edition.[18] Jewel cases featuring artwork, but no game or disk were available to people who ordered the physical PC release via an email offer from Limited Run Games.[19][20]

Multiple purchasers made note of how Limited Run Games had months to email or address this, yet chose not to. Twitter user "TrishaCat @WaywardKitt" commented on this on Twitter on August 30, 2021[21], only to find that Limited Run Games had quietly updated the page listing 7 months in, to reflect the current contents, after it had been sold out.[22] Twitter user "Bad Decision Maker @jr8rulz" asked about the "blatantly illegal .... “bait and switch” is also a violation of the Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Business Act." on September 1, 2021.[23] While the CEO of Limited Run Games responded that he'd only been thinking about it since the day prior.[24] Connor of Seafoam Gaming commented that LRG has a reputation for "namesearching", and only responded to the Shiren controversy after people started bringing attention to it.[25]

Aftermath

It's unknown if the large controversy surrounding Nintendo Switch/Steam Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island had to do with the lack of an international collectors edition for Shiren 6. Additionally, physical releases were done for Shiren 6, but not through LRG.
